organic food

These days many people are choosing to eat organic foods. People are finally starting to realize that what they put into their bodies affects their health. The harsh pesticides used in non-organic farming are harmful to the body and can result in long-term health problems. It’s been reported that large quantities of pesticides in the body can increase the risks of cancer.

Fortunately many fruits and vegetables are available in the organic variety. Many beverages like beer and even coffee can be organic. That means the hops or beans used to create the products were grown using organic-farming techniques. So there’s no reason to feel guilty about drinking that cup of organic Kona coffee in the morning.

Decaf Facts

September 26, 2008

Green coffee beansCoffee beans aren’t grown caffeine free. Many coffee drinkers are forced to switch to decaf in order to keep their health in tact, or get to bed early. It’s not likely they sit around researching the decaffeination process.

For those coffee drinkers that are interested the process works something like this: Green coffee beans are contacted with carbon dioxide at temperatures of 90-100 degrees Celsius. The combination of heat and carbon dioxide removes up to 97 percent of the caffeine.

Another decaffeination method is solvent extraction using oil or ethyl acetate as a solvent. The beans are coated with the solvent, and the solvent absorbs the caffeine. Upon removal from the solvent steam is used to clean the solvent from the beans.

Nutty For Macadamias

September 26, 2008
Hawaiian coffee gift baskets

Nuts can be a nutritious part of any diet. But are some nuts better than others? The answer is yes. First of all, any nut roasted in oil or honey is going to be worse for you than a plain-roasted or raw nut. Walnuts, almonds, pecans and pistachios in raw form can be added to a person’s diet in unlimited amounts. Another, less known member of the nut family is the macadamia nut. These nuts are native to the Hawaiian Islands and can be found in your nearest grocery store, or in one of those fancy Hawaiian coffee gift baskets. Macadamia nuts contain significant amount of fiber and B-complex vitamins, both essential to good health.

These cream-colored, sphere-shaped nuts are also full of antioxidants. Antioxidants can reduce the risks of certain types of cancer, and diminish the affects of aging.

Macadamia nuts, however, do have high-fat content at about 30-grams per a 12-nut serving. Those interested in adding macadamias to their diet should limit intake of other fats to decrease weight gain.

Kona Coffee

On the big Island of Hawaii, along the slopes of Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa, you will find Kona Coffee growing.  These slopes are found in the North and South Kona District of the Big Island of Hawaii. Bright sunny mornings, humid rainy afternoons combined with mild nights are what create the perfect coffee growing conditions in the Kona District of Hawaii. Only coffee grown in this district can legally be called “Kona”.

During February and March when you look up the sides of Mount Hualala and Mauna Loa, you will see what appears to be snow. This is known as “Kona Snow”, which are small white flowers that cover the trees. April brings the first sight of green berries and by late August the berries develope into a beautiful  cherry red color or  “cherry”. This is the start of Harvest which will last thru January. All berries are hand picked and each tree will be picked more than once during this time. An average tree will yield 20 to 30 pounds. It is this process that has given “Kona” coffee the reputation as one of the most sought after coffees in the world.

Hawaiian Kona Coffee

August 21, 2008

hcoffee.jpgIn Hawaii, you have to be awake pretty early, and it’s not because we live busy lives, quite the opposite.  Island life is so relaxing at times that I didn’t know what to do with myself.  My free time was spent lounging on the beach or going for a long circular drive.  I had a lot of fun being a kid with too much energy with my friends, getting into some trouble.

But eventually, you find that the sun wakes you up and there is no getting out of it.  Hawaiian Kona coffee was a part of almost every household on the island because it was such an enjoyable thing to drink in the morning when you are watching the waves.
