On the big Island of Hawaii, along the slopes of Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa, you will find Kona Coffee growing. These slopes are found in the North and South Kona District of the Big Island of Hawaii. Bright sunny mornings, humid rainy afternoons combined with mild nights are what create the perfect coffee growing conditions in the Kona District of Hawaii. Only coffee grown in this district can legally be called “Kona”.
During February and March when you look up the sides of Mount Hualala and Mauna Loa, you will see what appears to be snow. This is known as “Kona Snow”, which are small white flowers that cover the trees. April brings the first sight of green berries and by late August the berries develope into a beautiful cherry red color or “cherry”. This is the start of Harvest which will last thru January. All berries are hand picked and each tree will be picked more than once during this time. An average tree will yield 20 to 30 pounds. It is this process that has given “Kona” coffee the reputation as one of the most sought after coffees in the world.
In Hawaii, you have to be awake pretty early, and it’s not because we live busy lives, quite the opposite. Island life is so relaxing at times that I didn’t know what to do with myself. My free time was spent lounging on the beach or going for a long circular drive. I had a lot of fun being a kid with too much energy with my friends, getting into some trouble.
But eventually, you find that the sun wakes you up and there is no getting out of it. Hawaiian Kona coffee was a part of almost every household on the island because it was such an enjoyable thing to drink in the morning when you are watching the waves.

When you childhood home is infused with the smell of coffee, it stays with you your whole life. That wonderful aroma becomes associated with amazing memories and a warm cup between your fingers is a feeling that is reminiscent of home. When you feel the soft liquid in your body, it feels great knowing that the traditions of your house live on in you.My house always had Kona coffee brewing in the morning, and even though I moved off the island, I still find quality gourmet coffee everywhere that I go. The tradition of coffee drinking is strong in me.
